Back to the 90s

Ahh the 90s – era of grunge, raves, super-straight hair and Rimmel’s Heather Shimmer lippy. Those were the days…

But wait! Don’t get all misty-eyed and nostalgic just yet, for the decade that spawned Britpop and the Spice Girls is having a fashion comeback, with a 2018 upgrade (thank goodness).

Return of the Fanny Pack

Okay – in the UK we say bum-bag, but neither scream ‘style’ do they? Whatever you call them, they’ve been seriously up-styled for 2018, and have been spotted on the runway for Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Balenciaga. If it’s good enough for those guys…

Thong Song

Faves of spin-class instructors worldwide, the thong is back, and this time it wants attention! The exposed thong trend is set to raise eyebrows this year – choose how you wear it: poking above your low-slung jeans, under a sheer dress or – gulp – sauntering on the beach. Best get to the gym for some squat sessions.

Lennon Specs

Little round sunnies aren’t a universally flattering frame, we grant you, but if you’re blessed with elfin features then welcome this comeback with open arms. Dinky, groovy and popping up in every high street store, they’re the go-to fashion sunnie for the summer.

Here’s Cara Delevingne looking a bit grumpy in a pair of super-stylish sunnies:

What’s Up, Doc?

Once the reserve of grungers the world over, fashion’s favourite medic, Dr Marten, came back with a vengeance last year and this year it’s more of the same. Comfortable, cool, with an air of ‘I don’t give one’ – DMs epitomized the 90s. Wear them with a 2018 twist – pair with leather trousers, or a light, long dress with leather biker jacket or blazer. Also looks great with a fit and flare mini dress and denim bomber. The choice is yours! Now which colour should we pick first…?

Gwen Stefani loves her cherry reds:

Practical, cute, smart and comfortable, rucksacks are back on our backs! Hurrah, say we! It was a wardrobe staple in the 90s – teeny bags made famous by Cher in Clueless, and thumping great Jansport ones a la Claire Danes in My So Called Life. We think the mini backpack is cute, cool and practical.

Staying firmly in the 90s – these babies ain’t coming back:

 Cargo pants

All Saints have a lot to answer for, that’s all we’re saying.

Stripy Hair

A la Ginger Spice – subtle, it was not.

Low-rise pants

Because only YOU should know when it’s time for another wax.
